Fool me twice ... Oct 21, 2008 I've bought two Satellite laptops, and both have had their batteries fail within two years. One of them won't keep a charge for more than a few minutes, and sometimes powers off when you disconnect the AC power; the other sometimes just shuts down at the slightest movement. When we called the tech support, they didn't mention that the batteries were subject to recall; now I just found out, and Toshiba won't process the recall. I don't know if the problems are battery related, since it'll cost $500 to have Toshiba diagnose the problem. That's right, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS once it's out of warranty.
The screen on the newer laptop - just two years old - has gone funky, with some horizontal lines.
They both run somewhat warm, with the fan going nonstop.
As you can tell, these are my last Toshiba laptop purchases. It's great value for the first year, so enjoy!
Okay for your young ones to do homework and surf and maybe an old multiplayer like BF2-Veteran Desktop Rig Builders Beware Sep 23, 2008 The Good:
1. The N series network card works well with our Desktop and TrendNet router for sharing printer and other devices etc.
2.Can play inhouse Battlefield 1942 multiplayer at full 130MPS capacity of network card.
3. Web Access excellent
4. Ease of use- My daughters IQ is higher then mine so for her navigating Vista is ehh childs play.
5. Screen looks good actually.
6.Not too bad a price.
Cons.
1. SLI mode can slow games down rather speed them up, so using Nvida Panel turned off one and things run much better.
2. Batter Power useless for more then an hours worth simple tasks. Thank God libraries have electric outlets.
3. Driver updates are almost nil. Updating with standard video drivers immobilizes dvd player. People are using hacks to get the drivers to work with the dvd player. This is laziness and incompetence on the part of Toshiba.
4. Garbage software and proprietary CD to reinstall in case of total crash.
Extremely bad customer service Sep 08, 2008 I bought this Toshiba X205-SLi3 from Amazon. After trying to play HD-DVD, I find it was not working. Talked to Toshiba customer service who were totally inefficient. After checking the forums/websites, bought/downloaded Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra which played HD-DVDs. I didn't play any HD-DVD except in the first month of purchase. Got some HD-DVD disks last week and tried to play them. Didn't play. Called Toshiba TechSupport. A lady mentioned the name of firmware update and asked me to download and install it. Tried to install it but it said that firmware was for some other HD-DVD drive!
Upon contacting the Toshiba Tech Support, I was told this time to download the latest Toshiba HD-DVD player. Did that. Still no use.
After spending a long time, I stumbled upon a program in my notebook 'Toshba Assist' which said that my DVD drie failed in the Diagnostic test. I had to tell this to the Tech Support guy who talked to his supervisor and told me that it is a Hardware failure and I have to return the laptop to them to replace it. When I asked why such major hardware failure occurs and how can I avoid it, he told me to extend my warrnaty and that he can talk to Toshiba warranty and help me get it done as an exceptional case as normally it should be extended within 6 months of purchase.
Upon calling Toshiba Warranty section, I was told that they can't do it and as the Tech guys give such wrong assurances many times about warranty extension, I must contact them who can do it. It has been extended like this before.
Upon calling back Toshiba Tech guys and the customer relationship dept, they say that they can't extened it. I was angry that different employees give different statements and don't care about the customers' feelings.
They don't want to accept the responsibility for their employee's mistakes and washed their hands off stating that it is not their problem! They bumped me to several areas for more than two hours with no benefit.
AVOID this Toshiba devices as they don't know what they should say to the customer. More than that, there is no sympathy exhibited by the staff here.
I would NEVER buy a Toshiba product in my life.

Great Value!!! Mar 27, 2008 Pros:
-The laptop is actually cheap for the price you pay, only a few other laptops can compare to this one in terms of power, however, they are more expensive.
-Comes with a good graphics card, Nvidia SLI Dual Geforce 8600M GT, each with 256mb of VRAM.(someone stated that the graphics card only contains 256mb total, however, you must turn SLI-mode on in order to take advantage of both graphics cards. SLI-mode is off by default and the system will use the total 767mb from the hard disk memory when necessary.
-Comes with a bright 17 inch display
-More than decent speakers for a laptop.
-Plenty of ports, including an HDMI output.
-Great vents, doesn't get as hot as some laptops I've used.
-Full keyboard with number pad.
-HD-DVD drive to watch HD movies.
-Built in camera and mic.
-Built in memory-stick, SD slot.
-Fingerprint reader for extra security (I never used this feature)
Cons:
-HD-DVD drive, since HD-DVD lost the format war and is going to be useless by the end of the year. Also, the drive didn't play some regular dvd movies.
- Windows Vista installed, some may complain that Windows Vista is not as stable as XP, and it isn't backwards compatible with some XP software programs. I have run into many installation programs when I tried to install some very important software into this laptop, because they weren't Vista compatable. However, I have successfully installed a majority of them regardless. I have successfully installed and run programs such as; Adobe CS2 programs, Autodesk Maya 8.5, and Avid Xpress Pro, however each of them had some sort of work around, which isn't actually ideal.
- Only comes in 1 color/design, and the design is a hit or miss, not as attractive as other high-end laptops.
- Battery life doesn't last very long, however, this laptop is supposed to be a desktop replacement and isn't meant to be run on battery.
- You can make/get a more powerful desktop for the same price.
- It's quite heavy for a laptop.
- Comes pre-installed with a ton of garbage software.
Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI1 Jan 23, 2008 Only annoying factor so far is that the battery life remaining is shown only as a percentage of battery life, no indication of hours and minutes remaining.
Also facility for ripping CDs is much slower than my old Toshiba Tecra. My old Toshiba can rip 2 CDs for every 1 CD in this new machine.
