5I honestly don't see the problem.  Feb 25, 2008
Sure the U3 program sucks, and it's extremely annoying. But, it's really easy to just go to the Sandisk website and remove the software with a very simple uninstallation program.

Once you have the U3 software gone, it's a great flash drive. It's fast... It's durable... In fact, I've put mine through the washer, and after allowing it to dry, it still works fantastically.
Overall it's a good product once the software is removed from it.

1SOFTWARE, NOT HARDWARE??  Dec 01, 2007
ZERO STARS
BEWARE: SAN DISK THINKS ITS A SOFTWARE COMPANY
I purchased two San Disk Flash Drives with U3 installed. Package mentions the U3 in TINY print (THOUGHT I WAS BUYING A FLASH DRIVE!!). Want to use it as a flash drive, you HAVE to UNINSTALL the software. However, at the San Disk website, it only allows you to remove ONE copy of U3 regardless of owning two Flash Drives.
Think buying a car with a "special radio" installed... only you can't change the station, can't change the BLARING volume, and can't turn it off... did you buy a car or the radio?
I suggest you FIND ANY OTHER BRAND... AND AVOID THIS TURKEY...

2Flash drive fine; U3 software a disaster  Sep 08, 2007
What could be simpler than a flash drive? Apparently a simple but useful, small, keychain format flash drive can't be marketed anymore. I picked one of these up thinking I was just getting 2GB of USB storage. No, I ended up spending the next hour trying to get rid of the virus on this thing. Think you can put a slide presentation or a pictures or video on the drive expecting to simply plug it into your friend's computer and you're up and running? No, on plugging the drive in, the U3 launcher has to start up first. In addition to the new D: drive for the flash drive, another one (H: for me) for a read-only drive is built which may then conflict with a network drive you may already have at that drive letter.

Removing the software isn't obvious either. Simply reformatting the drive doesn't do it -- a small read-only partition has to also be removed and you can't get at it without the U3 uninstaller. An uninstall option is on the settings screen, but it didn't work for me (running XP), saying that for some reason it found two U3 drives (others have had this problem too; you can do a search to see). I finally unmounted the D: drive using Windows' "Safely Remove Hardware" wizard, which also unmounted the read-only partition. Then I downloaded the uninstall app from SanDisk and ran it. No other approach worked for me.

Maybe the concepts behind the U3 software are good. I've been thinking about how to make myself a portable environment on a flash drive myself, which is why I bought this drive. But the implementation of U3 is utterly abysmal. It is slow, intrusive, and (for me at least) was not easy to uninstall. I didn't look in detail through the apps offered through U3 but note that the apps must be *specially written* to run under U3, making it unlikely that most of the more interesting ones will be free. Finally, U3 installation requires registry access -- one thing I want to avoid because in some locations, Internet cafes disable any write access to the C: drive except temporary files, including the registry. This is what spurred me to investigate a portable flash drive environment in the first place.

Most simply put: whoever is behind U3 simply has not thought it through. To force this software on all buyers of Cruzer drives is a huge mistake by SanDisk.

I'm all for building portable environments on a flash drive, but U3 isn't it. I recommend avoiding any device with U3 software on it until the software gets more mature and much better defined.

5ReadyBoost - Ready Boost makes the Vista world go around!  Jul 16, 2007
After you plug this thing in you should get an option to setup ReadyBoost. Ready Boost is Vista way of adding flash memory to your system memory. If you add a gig to your system memory you will notice a serious boost in performance because your system no longer needs to use a paging file on your hard drive.

Do this with a laptop and it because a very inexpensive way of adding a huge performance boost to your laptop. An insane performance boost. Your laptops hard drive spins much slower than your home computer and often has less memory in it. This makes for extremely slow program switching (like surfing the internet and answering email and then going back to microsoft word... it takes a long time to bring it back up, not anymore!).

Another great thing about this stick is the U3 feature. You can load runnable programs on this stick. Makes it so you can take your browser options with you when you use an Internet cafe's computer. Also you can bring a kit with you to take back grandma's computer. Your anti-virus, search and destroy, etc...

5Excellent device!!  Jun 27, 2007
This product is really great! Super fast, light, the u3 software is very useful and there are good products for it which I hope will be more in future.
