Poor Performance, lots of potential Sep 17, 2008 Tons of space to store all the pictures and music and everything else. I feel a lot better now about the safety of my data after nearly losing everything from a faulty USB drive sitting next to my machine. After that I didn't think I could put a price on more security.
BUT:
Performance on this device is VERY poor when you access it from a Vista machine -particularly a Wireless Vista laptop. ReadyNAS is always tweaking their software and I have spent a good deal of time on their support boards finding the latest "firmware updates" (technically an OS update) and making tweaks to my network settings, their their network settings on the device, etc. It took days to get if working acceptably on the vista laptop but, the XP desktop which was running quite well suffered as a result.
If you are not comfortable doing this sort of thing, I do not recommend buying this device.
If you are a interested in this device because it can run slimcenter for your logitech (slim) media devices directly from the device, forget it. After loading a number of old/current/beta released of the slimcenter (slimserver) software I found that the web interface was so slow it was unusable. I have a collection of 50,000+ tracks which makes the server grind nearly to a halt. It takes 45 seconds to load the webpage, another 45 to get to the first page of artists, etc. It took 15 hours to index them which doesn't really bother me. Performance from the slim players is also slow. ReadyNAS just doesn't have a processor that can handle that much music. OK I have a lot but, I'm only using 12% of the 4TB ReadyNAS and a lot of that is not music. That's why you buy a large device, to hold and manage lots of stuff. Shouldn't be too much to ask.
I think the device has a lot of potential. The web interface is not too difficult to use, there's a large community of people who contribute to the cause. However, I don't think Netgear is taking the Vista performance issues seriously enough nor do they have adequate support for the features they put on the device. Just hop over to their site and check out the support boards if you don't believe me.
The same goes for all of their NAS models. All run the same OS and I saw similar reports from a wide range of models.
This whole review may be void if they find a way to fix these issues. Personally I doubt they'll ever fix the slimcenter issues -just a weak processor.
