5Iomega USB-FireWire 250MB External Drive for Mac and PC  Dec 23, 2008
I've had this little drive for about a month. It's nice and compact and quite fast. It comes with a FireWire cable and two USB cables (one is for data transfer, the other is for additional power if the data link isn't powered or is underpowered). I wanted to comment on some things said in the reviews that had been published here at the time I bought it.

First, mine gets warm to the touch (so obviously it's heating to something over 98.6 degrees F) but not dangerously hot. I can pick it up anytime it's running.

Second, it came formatted with a single partition in the FAT32 (PC) partition scheme. It should work out of the box for most PCs. It will not work for a Mac out of the box. You have to repartition it, using Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities) into either APM for PowerPC Macs (G4-G5 cpus) or GUID (GPT) for Intel Macs. You may also choose multiple partitions during this process. I set mine up with three, equally dividing the 232.9 GB of space available to the user. If you are using Leopard (Mac OSX 10.5.x) the partitioning scheme isn't such big deal as you can dynamically adjust the partitioning setup at a later date.

Altogether I'm very pleased with this drive. I'm using it for Time Machine backups, for a boot installation of Leopard 10.4.4 and storage of all the subsequent uninstalled update packages that come from Apple, and for holding chunks of my iTunes library that has grown too big for my current internal HD. This device gives you lots of options.

5Mac portable hard drive  Dec 20, 2008
No problem after initially formatting the hard drive to the Mac's disk format. The drive states that partitioning the drive is not recommended. I partitioned the drive into 3 sections using the Mac's Disk Utility without a problem. Works great on the Mac's Firewire bus. I recommend the drive.

1Failed & Lost All Data, music and porn in 2 months!!!  Dec 16, 2008
I bought this in October 2008 and on December 14 2008, this drive all of a sudden failed and I lost all of my data, music, porn! This is going to be pricey and a pain to have to get all of this stuff again. It costs a minimum of $700 to pay for recovery services for lost data. Take my advice, no hard drive is flawless and they ALL eventually fail. Get a back up drive of all of your valued files otherwise you might never see them again.

4It's fast! Did I mention it was fast?  Dec 07, 2008
I'm using this as a firewire drive with our in-house macs and I have to say that I'm completely blown away by the speed. I've noticed USB has been sorta slow on my mac (reviews of mac book pros point to bad USB drivers/hardware implementation) but I was not expecting the speed from the firewire drive. As other reviewers have noted it does get very hot so be careful where you put it and that's why I give it four stars. Additionally this makes me worried about it's long term life but for now I'm enjoying watching my co-workers drop their jaw when I show them how fast this thing burns through transfers.

5Excelent drive!  Nov 27, 2008
I'm very pleased with these drive. I bought it because my old PowerBook can not power USB hard drives. I have worked with it on both Mac and PCs and works fast (especially on FireWire) and reliably. It can get quite hot when used intensively, but that has not affected performance in any way.

At the time of writing, there are (slightly) cheaper and lighter drives if you don't need the firewire, but if you need or like this interface, this is a great choice.
