2This and comparable products fail to meet expectation  Dec 10, 2008
I concur with another reviewer. This device should be DCE and not DTE. Take a look around at serial devices. They are DTE. So why make a product that will require the use of a clumsy and bulky null-modem cable 95% of the time? In my case 100% of the time.

Also I would have liked to see a fully self contained unit. Meaning no need for an AC cord. Yes, this unit MUST be plugged into an AC outlet to function! The necessity of an AC adapter completely negates IOGEARS claim of "cleans up cable clutter". Also I foresee instances where AC power will be hard to obtain (e.g. only DC power available).

I put some thought into this last night and it would have been ideal for this adapter to have a small rechargeable lithium ion battery built in for short term use. For long term use this device would have two options 1. USB and 2. AC. USB power cable and AC power adapter would connect to the same power input on the device and would also facilitate battery recharging.

As it stands this device is neither convenient or useful. It is far more cumbersome to use than simply plugging in a console cable.

4Works for me  Aug 13, 2008
I am using this Serial Adapter to connect Scale to Handheld computer and it works fine

3Unfortuantely this didn't work for me...  Jul 06, 2008
Aspects of this device seemed to work, i.e., my computer recognized it, but overall I didn't get it to work with the serial device I was connecting it to. I've built several computers (tech savvy), but after switching to a mac, I really don't need to spend a day trying to figure something out. I just wanted to plug it in and have it work. So, maybe this device is good, but not for me.

4Worked for me  Jan 12, 2008
I was pretty apprehensive to purchase this item based on the other reviews, but I was also pretty stuck. I have a weather station that has an RS232 port but I didn't want to have to tether it to my PC in the study with a serial cable. From other bluetooth experiences, I knew that bluetooth had a serial capability, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Getting it to all work was a challenge, I'll admit. I started with a wired connection to the weather station and made sure everything was fine. I added a bluetooth adapter to the PC and made sure other things could connect to it (bluetooth seems to be very finicky that way). I then disconnected the serial wire and hooked up the bluetooth adapter to the weather station. The joining seemed to work ok (XP box) and all was well. Unfortunately, the bluetooth serial adapter comes across on COM11 and the software I was using for the weather station only supported up to COM4. I found some trialware com port redirection software which allowed me to redirect COM11 to COM1 and voila...it all worked.

One very annyoing problem: The serial bluetooth connection seems to be session specific...if another user logs-in to my PC (or if I remote into the box) the serial connection is lost. I'm not sure if that's a problem with this device, my bluetooth adapter, my adapter's software, or how XP ties it all together, but it is annoying. The PC in the study is a common use machine for our family and it was nice for us to each have our own accounts (separate desktops, bookmarks, etc). I've tried reasonably hard to get around that, with no success. One funny note...the bluetooth mouse that I used to vaidate my adapter is not session specific...it seems to run in a machine context. Too bad the serial adapter doesn't.

If I had it to do all over again I'd probably do it different...serial to wifi, most likely, because there are network port to serial port adapting software packages out there as well. When all was said and done, I ended up spending $30 on a bluetooth adapter, about $70 for this product, and $50 for the serial port redirection software to be able to have the weather station in the family room instead of in the study. Oh well.

1DO NOT BUY - DOES NOT WORK!  Jul 03, 2007
After spending many hours (phone and email) with tech support I was able to get this device to function with 2 of them back to back with each other and transfer files via x-modem PC to PC (as a test). I did not buy them for this purpose (Wireless or wired LAN is MUCH faster!).
I was able to limp along to provision a box at 4800 bps (software port speed setting only) via bluetooth adapter to one of these using HyperTerminal (not available on my Vista PC, had to download TeraTerm freeware replacement). I had to wire an adapter to loop pin 7 to 8 toward the dB9 of this adapter because it is not capable of turning off the hardware handshaking. It still would not work with products I bought it for and on XP and Vista PC's both I get the Blue screen of Death every time I point the software at the GSB301 COM port!
