Hawking Technologies' HWC54D Wireless-G Cardbus PC Card Adapter features the latest in wireless technology. Standard wireless cardbus cards use low power antennas that deliver a circular signal pattern. This type of pattern receives interference from the metal components within the laptop resulting in a drop in wireless performance and distance. The HWC54D solves this problem with its advanced directional 6 dBi Hi-Gain Antenna that delivers a strong concentrated signal in the direction of the wireless access point to establish a strong wireless link resulting in a significant increase in operating distance (up to 200%). The Hi-Gain antenna position swivels and folds to make finding an optimal signal easy and simple. When you are not using the card, simply fold the antenna down for compact, safe, easy transport.

I have used cisco aironet, d-link, hawking and Buffalo high power. I would rate them 1.Buffalo g- mimo 2.Hawking HWC 54D (close second) 3. Cisco Aironet 4. D-Link 651

Very happy to find this adapter. Our building setup was such that other cards just could not receive the signal. But this one did! Now we have Internet service where we didn't before. And in other situations, the desired signal is stronger.

Installation went well. Smooth, actually. The other cards were painful to say the least. The Linksys *said* it installed, however it would not work once we got to the hotel--would have been better if had not installed at all.

Highly recommend this. Although I wish I would have tried it first, I feel even more satisfied with it after trying the others.

The Broadcom wireless adaptor that is built into my notebook generally does an excellent job of locking onto any decent signal in the vicinity. Accordingly, I for years would never have thought to need a card like this. However, I have been spending a couple of nights a week at a large rural home where the wireless access point is in a home office on one side of the house and my bedroom is all the way across the home in another wing. My internal wireless feature works fine outside in the garden, in the garage, in a car in the driveway, in most downstairs rooms, but not in the bedroom where I work at a desk. It fades in and out and wasn't enough even to load a simple web page like Yahoo or download POP email. Forget about video; instead, the adaptor would tantalize me by letting me know it could see the network, but all I would get is an intermittant connection. Grrrrr. A card like this seemed the easiest and least intrusive solution.

Sure enough, this thing turns a basically useless signal into a "very good" signal when properly aimed, allowing me to get even high-speed streaming video. I couldn't be happier.

Setup was easy: insert disk. Run setup program. Insert card. Click Next a few times as windows finds and installs the card. Carefully open fold-up antenna and aim same using the nifty signal strength utility.

Yes, I know I'm going to have to be careful not to yank the antenna or I will doubtless break it. But it's not like I'm going to be slamming my notebook around in the spot I am currently using it.

I couldn't be happier with how this all worked out.

5Hawking wireless laptop card w/movable antenna  Jun 10, 2007
This card is great. I bought a card from Buffalo tech and one of their antennas and spent a week with their tech support (who did not care) and could not get it to load on my laptop. This card went right up on line and with the diagnostic utility it came with, I was able to tune right in on a hot signal and connect to the wireless network in the remote room where I am staying. I love it. The swivel antenna allows me to keep the laptop in one place. I was turning the laptop in all sorts of directions to get a signal.
The only drawback is I cannot fit another PCMCIA card in the adjacent slot at the same time. I will live with this as the reception is worth it!

I decided to purchase this product even though many reviewers said that the antenna part, that lifts up, is very flimsy. I figured that I could be careful and it would last a long time. I made it about three weeks and then it happened. I was in a hotel room and getting my laptop set up so I could get my emails and as I was lifting up the antenna it broke. I really didn't do anything wrong. So there it was, in my hand, dangling from a little wire the went through the hole into the card. I decided to do a little investigation and see if I got a better signal with me holding the antenna up as far as I could(about 2 inches)as opposed to placing it down in the closed position. I noticed no difference so I poked the wire back in the hole and got out the transparent tape and taped the antenna back onto the card. I have used it in this position for a few weeks and it seems to get a good signal everywhere I try (in wifi areas). As long as it gives me a good signal I am happy.
