Not Compatible with Windows XP SP3 Oct 03, 2008 If you've upgraded your Windows XP OS to service pack 3, this device will not run. Worse, after you install the software, Windows becomes unstable and there is no way to fix the damage except to reinstall Windows or do a System Restore to a point before the installation of this device.
But what bothers me the most is that Diamond offers NO support. I tried to phone them but there is no telephone contact info listed on their website for tech support. I tried their tech support chat facility for three days and was always told that no operators were online. I tried emailing them and they never replied. This left me feeling pretty negative toward Diamond products in general.

NOT Mac compatible Sep 30, 2008 I was unable to find any info on if this is Mac compatible, but I purchased it anyway, since all the ones that said they were explicitly Mac compatible were much more expensive. Well, it is NOT Mac compatible. I've found differing info on whether this is because Intel Macs only use the more efficient firewire to transfer video or what, but I was unable to get it to work. The Mac won't detect that the device is connected in any program. Also, the transfer program that comes with the device is only for Windows.
So I installed the program on our Windows computer and it worked fine hooked up to the VCR. Basically, your monitor becomes the TV screen for the VCR - you can just record the whole thing or fast forward and record segments of old videos by pushing the button on the device or on your screen in the program.
The program they give you is really just for capturing - it's not fancy at all. I transferred the files back to my Mac after capturing them and edited them with iMovie.
So - recommended, but only if you have a Windows computer and some decent editing software.
Does what it should but has challenges Sep 29, 2008 Overall, I'm "okay" this product does what it advertises, though I've found problems with it very easily. It seems that this device depends on host processing more than I'd like.
Hit(s):
o Captures analog quality audio and video through USB ports on reasonably current hardware.
o Includes software to capture video directly to local disk.
Miss(es):
o Extremely sensitive to static energy - can cause device to fail if you're recording on a laptop and move enough to build up a relatively minor static charge. The hardware needs to be grounded to prevent this.
o Utilizes more CPU than expected.
o Included software flaky - many quirks.
o Default recording format doesn't work on some systems.
o Audio/video de-sync problem seen frequently even on recent hardware when recording longer periods (15 minutes or more).
Very Pleased Sep 23, 2008 I'm very pleased with the results I have had with this item. It was easy to set up, and intuitive to use. I have made several reasonably sharp videos from old VHS tapes, using the DVD resolution, and have encountered none of the sound/image sync problems I've read about in other reviews. I have, however experienced some kind of scanning interference. I assume that there is some external source causing it, although,I shut off all dimmers, fluorescent lights, and motors that might have caused it, but could not eliminate it. It's not very noticeable, and I'm still pleased with the look of my videos.

It works, however it is in no way perfect. Sep 20, 2008 I bought this product only because I did not have enough to buy the Game Bridge. Needless to say, I am pleased with the product. I do have a few rants, however...
The driver software. When I this arrived in the mail, I tested it and it worked great. When I used it later, it did not work. I ended up having to update with the drivers on the Diamond website. After that, it worked, it was still very inconvenient to have to update them just to use it.
Next is the actual recording. There are many settings to make the quality better, which is nice, but they don't fix a few problems.
First, there is sometimes lag in the recordings, which makes the VHS tapes I am trying to convert look "jumpy". It also stops completely at
points. The sound still plays, so when it comes back to normal, it has to catch up with the sound, which loses 6-8 seconds of footage.
I sometimes like to record games with this product. It works, but there is a slight lag in the buttons, which causes rhythm games like Guitar Hero to be nearly unplayable.
All in all, it is a good product for the price. But it is not perfect.
