Agree Don't use this for Lego Mindstorms Dec 31, 2007 After reading Shindler's review, I thought that surely I could repeat his steps using the widcomm drivers. And, since this unit is on the mindstorms BT compatible list and is narrow enough to allow plugging in adjacent USB cables, I bought it.
The usb-1520 installs software called Bluesoliel. Although this s/w will talk to the NXT brick, it will _not_ talk to the Mindstorms NXT programming software. (I'm making a long story short. I did contact Mindstorms customer support; they did help, but they did not know Bluesoliel would not work. Kept giving me more and more meaningless diagnostics.)
I investigated getting the widcomm drivers. Widcomm has been bought by Broadcom. All the Widsomm/Broadcom drivers, as near as I can see, check for the existence and proper content of a license. If the license isn't there, the install will not be successful. Some versions will not even install. To boot, not all versions are even compatible with the Cambridge radio that the usb-1520 uses. Anyway, it requires what I consider to be a major hack to the registry to be able to use Widcomm/Broadcom drivers. And using their s/w is probably illegal if you haven't bought it.
So, I sent my usb-1520 back to Amazon for a refund, bought a Belkin F8T013. The drivers with it were Broadcom. It worked fine. Skinny too. I am happy. Way less trouble than hacking to make the usb-1520 work. BTW the Belkin is not on the Mindstorms compatibility list, but it is on a list compiled by someone else. Google to find. Also, there is a list on the Broadcom site for their current OEMs that use their BY drivers. FYI Belkin is not in that list anymore.

*** Don't buy this for your Lego Mindstorms NXT !! *** Jan 25, 2007 My review is relative to using this device with Lego Mindstorms NXT. My review in no way applies to any other application of the device.
Here are my findings --
I purchased this device because it was in the compatibility listing on the Lego Mindstorms web site.
The version of the "Cables unlimited USB-1520" that I received came with the IVT BlueSoleil software, and driver. I was quite successful in getting the software loaded, and in fact could attach to the NXT with no problem. The problem was that the Lego MindStorms NXT software would not find the NXT through the Bluetooth device. I spent hours combing through forums on the topic trying everything to no avail. The general consensus seems to be that the IVT software simply won't work. Attempts at trying to load a so-called windows generic Bluetooth driver was useless. Question for Lego, "Why is the device in the compatibility list if it's software won't work?" Perhaps the older versions used a different driver. Try and search the Lego site for information and you will be amazed at how little helpful information there is on getting Bluetooth problems resolved. I also suffered many Blue screens of death while trying to uninstall, and reinstall this driver on my Win XP SP 2 machine a number of times before moving on to the solution.
I found a solution, but it requires a bit of patience and PC savvy. You must download and use Widcomm driver to make the device work with Lego Mindstorms NXT software. Your favorite search engine should provide you with what you need. There is a good site out there with detailed instructions and everything you need. This info is for those unfortunate as myself that are determined to make this work.
For the average person that wants to just plug and go, and download programs to their NXT, I can't recommend this device, it will waste your time and frustrate you beyond belief.
Easy to use Jan 05, 2007 Bought this to download programs to the Lego Mindstorm robots as it was on their list of bluetooth adapters that would work. The software was easy to load and I have made the computer and the robot say they see each other using bluetooth but so far have not gotten a program to download. Am sure it will, just need to spend some time with it.
