1It might be faster to scribe than print using this machine  May 26, 2008
WHEN this printer feels like printing, the quality is acceptable; unfortunately, that's just not often enough. It seems to lose its microcode about 40% of the time, meaning you need to turn the machine off, wait a few minutes and restart it - and pray to the print-god that it will finally work.

Sometimes I just hand-write a letter or memo instead of "fussing" with it.

Very discouraging. Try another brand.

4Good Printer For the Money  Apr 04, 2008
A basic unit. It gets the job done without problems or fanfare. Simple to use. A great value. Reconditioned toner cartridges can be bought online for about $30.

5Amazing Product  Nov 22, 2007
This is an amazing product for the money. I had a Brother 4800 MFC for years. The only reason I upgraded was for the envelope feeder and the PDF Scanning capability. And as a bonus, this machine is faster and quieter than the 4800.

3Good function, sticky auto-feeder  Nov 16, 2007
You can tell Brother makes a high-quality product. Very easy setup, very consistently produces good work.

However, anything I scan or copy has a tendency to get stuck in the feeder. Just a warning - it's a bit sensitive and if past warranty (1 year) can be pricey to fix. I'm switching to a flatbed scanner after the wallet pain this has caused!

1Think twice . . .   Nov 16, 2007
I bought this item through Amazon about 18 months ago. It worked fine, UNTIL the toner cartridge ran out. I bought a Brother toner replacement cartridge, which cost about $100. And guess what? The machine continues to give me toner cartrdige error messages, and I can't print a thing out. The Brother websites troubleshooting instructions are virtually useless, telling you that if their instructions don't work, buy another cartridge. Really? How many of us have a hundred here or there to sink into cartridges for this machine?

Very frustrating, and a very blase attitude regarding troubleshooting. I will look for a replacement from a company with a better commitment to quality and customer service.
