reduce, recycle, reuse Aug 03, 2008 For less than half the price of a 15" lcd TV, this little box let me make use of my old, otherwise-disused, 15" lcd monitor. It works great, easy to set up. Definitely recommend it.

The Perfect Media Companion for your LCD or CRT Monitor Jul 24, 2008 Whether you are looking for a great way to utilize a spare CRT or LCD computer monitor, or you are looking to have the ability to use one monitor and set of speakers for your computer and to watch TV, the AverMedia TV Box7 promises to allow either of these scenarios with one simple external device. While some people may not mind installing a TV tuner board inside their PC, this requires that your PC be powered on in order to watch television on your monitor. An external tuner, such as the TV Box7 allows you to hook up your monitor and amplified speakers directly, giving the user an opportunity to watch television at any time without needing to power on the computer. So you can either connect this device to a standalone monitor and speakers, for TV viewing only, or in combination with a PC to allow both computer use and television viewing from the same monitor and speakers. You can even connect the TV Box7 to any projector that has a standard VGA input.
The AverMedia TV Box7 comes packaged with a vertical stand, an infrared remote control w/ batteries, an AC power adapter, a VGA cable (15-pin male to male), an audio cable (stereo male to male mini-plug) and a user manual. Installation is a breeze, and the user manual instructs you how to connect the TV Box7, whether hooking it to a monitor and speakers alone or as a pass through device in combination with a computer. There is no software to install and no extra cables to buy. Everything you need comes in the package. The manual instructs you how to setup the menu language, how to set the TV input mode (Air or Cable TV), how to set the output resolution and all other settings that you may desire to adjust. I had mine hooked up and running flawlessly in less than 15 minutes. The handy remote has buttons to access every feature of the tuner device, as well as to control channel selection and volume adjustments. Using the TV Box7 couldn't be easier. If you know how to use a basic television then you will not have any problems controlling this device.
There are several Pros and a few cons with this device:
Pros
****
- Supports CRT, LCD and Plasma monitors. Also supports projectors with VGA connection.
- Supports several output resolutions: (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024).
- Provides Progressive Scan output.
- Supports Stereo Audio input/output.
- Has Picture In Picture feature.
- Provides video inputs for Coax, VGA, S-Video and Composite.
- Has headphone output jack built in (stereo mini-plug).
- Allows connection of additional video device, such as a game console, DVD player, camcorder, etc.
- Small footprint requires very little desktop space (6.3"x4.5"x1").
- Has 3D-Motion Adaptive De-Interlace feature for razor sharp images at high resolution.
- Provides stereo audio input/output, with SAP support.
- Costs far less than a TV and provides added usefulness to any spare monitor that you may have sitting around the house.
Cons
****
- Unit is extremely lightweight, causing it to slide and tip over very easily from the weight of the attached cables.
- S-Video and component inputs are located on front of device, which can look unsightly and cause a cable mess on your desktop.
- Does not support 5.1 surround sound.
- Button labels on device can be very hard to read (buttons are well labeled on remote though).
- When used in combination with computer, tuner causes some mild ghosting of video coming from PC (does not affect sharpness of TV video though)
I want to explain some of the Cons mentioned above. First of all, the TV Box7 tuner is extremely small and lightweight. While this may seem nice, the lack of weight causes the unit to slide around and tip when cables are connection to it. I ended up sitting a computer speaker on top of it to hold the device in place. Although the front mounted S-Video and component inputs are handy, they cause a potential eyesore and cable management problem (depending on the placement of the tuner box itself). Since the IR receiver (for the remote control) is also on the front, you have to keep the tuner box in clear view, so hiding the cables could be very difficult. The fact that the unit does not support 5.1 surround sound isn't such a big deal, although some may find this a disappointment. However, the TV Box7 is not really meant to be the hub of your home entertainment system. The button labels on the device itself can be very difficult to read, especially in low light. There is simply not enough contrast between the color of the text and the color of the device itself. And finally, since I hooked this device up to be used in combination with a home computer, I have noticed some mild ghosting of text and images on my monitor when the tuner is off. Since the computer video output now goes into the TV Box7 tuner, and a video output cable is connected from the tuner box to the monitor, I assumed that there was some sort of noise or interference coming through one of the cables. I tried installing some very high quality cables but the ghosting still occurs. It is not a big problem but it makes the computer's video output look a bit fuzzy or blurry. The TV picture quality is perfectly sharp however.
Overall I am extremely pleased with the AverMedia TV Box7. It is very simple to install and operate, and allows me the ability to watch TV on my LCD computer monitor without the need to power up my computer. The remote control is very well designed (fits in hand very nicely), with a practical button layout. The device is covered under a 1 year limited warranty (parts & labor), which is pretty typical for most consumer electronics. The television output is crisp and clear and I appreciate the high resolution capabilities, which match the recommended input of my 20" LCD monitor perfectly. The cons of this device definitely do not outweigh the pros, so I give the AverMedia TVBox7 a solid 4 stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking to add TV capabilities to their computer or spare monitor.

great value, good buy Jun 26, 2008 great product. it work right out of the box. picture quality is great (i tested using a 15''CRT). picks up all my cable channels.
the box automatically reduces output resolution if it exceeds that of the monitor.
apart from testing it with cable i also played my PS2 (playstation 2) and the image quality and frame rate were superb using the composite inputs.
a word of caution though. the ports for s-video and composite are slightly recessed. if the sleeves for your cables are on the thick side they will not work.
i recommend this product and would buy it again.
Don't throw away your old CRT or LCD computer monitor just yet... Jun 23, 2008 Useful. Versatile. Reuse your old computer monitors instead of landfilling OR recycling. This is quite simply a no-brainer.
I have two units--one for my kitchen counter (5-yr-old 20" CRT monitor) and one for a kids' bedroom (15-yr-old 15" CRT monitor). Voila. Two working televisions for $120 each (including the cost for speakers). NOTE FOR PARENTS: Its size makes sharing or relocating the unit quick and painless (i.e. temporarily removing kids' TV privilege, sharing between rooms). Play room-by-room music from cable/satellite stations through speakers only...CRT off.
Front AV and S-video inputs can be used for CD/DVD or gaming. Programming the channels was a little tricky, but once set up, no more problems. One of my best buys this year.
Avermedia TV Box running with a 21" LCD monitor May 06, 2008 I've had this product for a week now and it seems to be working very well.
The product was easy to install, menu is easy to navigate...plugged in and worked right away.
The only concern I had prior to purchasing was image quality. The quality on my 21" widescreen LCD is not too bad. It is not HD by far, not even as good as a normal TV. but at 1280x1050 it is good enough for an additional TV...if you are a few feet from the monitor, which is comfortable viewing anyway, you can't really see the video errors and it looks as good as a standard TV.
I just have it in the play room for my kids to watch, and they aren't too picky.
I would recommend this product to a friend, and buy again myself.
