5A lovely little machine - we're hooked on Apple now!  Aug 12, 2009
We used to be a Windows family. All through high school and college I had PCs - and so did my wife's family - they called them "IBM's" when I got my first one, even though it wasn't made by IBM. We'd been convinced that while Mac's were more attractive, window's-based PCs were more practical.

Not anymore. When I had the option at work to get a new machine, I decided to take a chance on an iMac - and loved it. Still, when my wife needed a laptop for home use, she went with the Sony Vaio. It seemed like the perfect machine, it was top-of-the-line, the very best Vaio available at the time. Yet she had endless problems with it - the power cord burned out while under warranty and we had to ship it to get fixed, then another one burned out right after the warranty was up. The dvd drive stopped working. We were plagued by viruses and spybots, and had to buy a subscription to a virus protection program, which worked but seemed to slow things down. The machine overheated regularly -- even late at night with no one using it, we'd hear the fan blowing at top speed unless we shut it off. After three years, the machine up and died.

So she went with this Mac, and after 9 months her honeymoon's not over. She loves it. Once you get used to the differences, Mac OS X is intuitive and flexible. It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't tried, but working with OS X is not only intuitive and easy, it's aesthetically satisfying. It's simple and elegant. We love the software that comes with it. My kids use iLife '09 all the time - especially iMovie and iPhoto. I use it for editing video and love the flexibility of Apple's Final Cut Express 4.

Sure, they just came out with a newer model that's even fancier and slightly faster and less expensive than what we paid -- but that's to be expected in the technology game. One note: I have the aluminum shelled Mac Book Pro and I think I prefer her white case to mine. When I upgrade in a few years I'll go with the white. The aluminum does warp slightly after a period of use, but the white shell appears to be exactly the same 9 moths later as it was when we picked it up. We're very happy we went with a Mac.

5Love it  Feb 19, 2009
I'll keep this short and sweet As a recent convert to the Mac I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like this little Mac. It just works and does what it is supposed to do. The only reason I have not totally switched over to Mac is, there does not seem to be a Mac version of MS Money or any nice financial software for the Mac. The only complaint is that the edges of the case are sharp and dig into my palms and wrist. I have read several complaints about this issue. That is only a minor issue.

5Macbook  Oct 02, 2008
Pro:
- Great device, but extremely basic
- Does alot of basic stuff such as word, surfing the internet, and chat
- nice and small, but leaves mark after long time use ( year or so)

Con:
- Expensive for the hardware
- Macbook Pro would be alot better for best value

For MAC newbies

I can't review the specs of the machine I will leave it to the experts but I will discuss what happened after my MAC broke down.

The experience:

My computer started to act up I tried to troubleshoot the problem on apple.com. After a few days of the "self IT help", I took it to the Apple store during lunch. I was asked if I had an appointment. I was told to take it to another Apple store they were too busy. Finally with some understanding that my $1,500 computer had problems and that it didn't matter if it was at home or at the store for a week they let me drop it off. A Genius tech was able to put in a test part until replacement parts came into the Apple store. Note: on the form that you sign a potential $100 charge may apply to your service.

The appointment:

They got the parts in and I made an appointment. An appointment doesn't mean immediate help but possibly around your appointed time on a shared basis with another person that has an appointment too for the IPhone or IPOD. Translation more waiting time.

As a user my preference:

Let me know that as a Genius you may delete something that I did not save. I lost my favorites on Safari. Fortunately, I was able to figure out that if I go to my trash I will find the bookmark.plist file and restore my bookmarks.

Apple store please let me tell you my computer problems and fix it having the choice to leave it over your preference of me making an appointment.

Scratching my head over Apple's strategy:

They have the sales strategy down to a science, but the backend support needs an overhaul. Why do they think it is value added to have the potential new customers of their products stand and wait with people having problems. From my experience at lunch time and during the evening the wait could be long and frustrating.

Final- As a PC user interfacing with the MAC is great.
